About Bandologie
Bandologie was made to help musicians and upcoming artists develop a successful career by learning how to sell more music, play sold out shows and make a living out of their music. How Bandologie Works
This book was written for musicians who are either currently in a band or planning to form a band. The information collected here is targeted at improving both the financial and artistic success of a band.Due to my incessant interest in music and bands, I have had the opportunity to learn about the habits of many successful musicians. After taking a closer look at the varied circumstances surrounding these successful musicians, I realized that there were certain characteristics that were present for every successful band. The insights that were gained through my experience and research have been written down for you here.
Of course, every success is a unique story in itself. Every human being has his or her own personal experiences, wishes, goals and style. Every person is different and therefore every band is different. That is why each success story is one-of-a-kind. This is a good thing and the way it should be, there should never be a “blueprint” for bands especially when it comes to music and lyrical content. Luckily, that would not work anyway. Music and lyrics still have to be absolutely individual and personal.
This book will help you and your band–if you put the methods described here into practice. Bandologie also contains a few select stories and real life examples that are, to some extent, very amusing. On a more serious note though, this book is not intended for entertainment purposes but is to be utilized as a textbook–a practical guide to your professional life as a musician.
As you may have noticed by now, I am not a world-famous rock star. Nor have any of my former bands enjoyed colossal success, even though they were all fantastic bands. Today I understand why and wish that I had known years ago what I know now… the traits and habits that are necessary to become a successful band.
Now, I wish you exactly what I wished for myself: to make your band as successful as my former bands could have been had I possessed the right knowledge and attitude back then.
Am I right in assuming that it is okay with you if I use as few technical terms as possible? This will help you read the book quickly and easily.
You can also memorize or even better take notes on the things that are most relevant to you while reading this book for the first time. After all, writing things down is the first step in putting theoretical knowledge into practice. It is my assumption that you would like to have your success in practice, not in theory, right? Okay, then...let’s get started. Read more

More details on Bandologie
So, now you want to get into the details. Let's start with some simple questions and answers:Who exactly should read this website?
Bandologie was made specifically for musicians who want to succeed in the music industry. Sure, every musician dreams of being famous every now and then. However, Bandologie is for the artists who 1.) dream… a lot and 2.) are willing to take action and do something about it. That being said, this site was made for the very ambitious musician. If you are a hobby musician and you are happy with that, you may still want to explore the site out of curiosity. However, this is a website has been made especially for musicians who want to gain great successes.
Where does the name, Bandologie, come from?
Bandologie is the acronym of »Band« (music group), an »o« to make it pronounceable and »logie« (ending for sciences in German). It's the science of bands, if you will.
Why is it Bandologie and not Bandology?
Simple: Bandologie became a trademark by the German release and with several positive feedbacks; I decided to leave it as it is. It is simply the name for a trademark such as Volkswagen, BMW, Rammstein, and now Bandologie.
Is the book written in German or English?
The book entitled “Bandologie–How to Lead Your Band to Success as a Musician” is written in US English. Whenever there are examples about highly successful German artists there is a short explanation right before the example starts. You will understand every word. The book has been proofread by professionals who are native English speakers (this website was written by me. I know English from school, reading plenty of English books and watched thousands of interviews with music stars). The book with the German title “Bandologie – wie man als Musiker seine Band zum Erfolg führt” (www.bandologie.de) is in German.
You are from Germany, so how do you know about the worldwide music industry?
Great question, over here we have the third biggest music market, after the US and Japan. We marketed major releases of Elvis Presley, Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock, Queensrÿche, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), The Corrs, The Calling ... and so many more that I can't name them all. However, the Bandologie book was extensively shaped by examples from international artists right from the beginning. From the first line I wrote, it was obvious that this book was meant to be an international release. I grew up with US bands like Nirvana, Metallica, Guns N' Roses as well as UK artists like Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne and of course the Australians, AC/DC.
Wait a minute ... is the book all about rock 'n' roll?
No, it's not. While reading the book you will definitely notice that I prefer rock music as a listener. However, the methods and principles described are true for the whole industry. If you are a hip hop artist or a pop singer, my individual preference for rock should not deter you from getting the book!
Nils, what kind of music shaped your life?
As a child I listened to all kinds of international and German pop music. The artist who definitely had the most influence during my childhood was Herbert Grönemeyer, who is probably the most successful German pop singer. My mother was a huge fan of his music. To this day I know all of his songs and many of his lyrics by heart.
When I was 13 I had a crush on Madonna. I loved the music of Phil Collins, Michael Jackson and Roxette. Shortly after that, in 1991, Nirvana's Nevermind was released. This record blew me away and I immediately started playing the guitar. After that, I soon discovered Metallica and bought all of their records. During my youth I listened to all kinds of metal, black metal and punk rock.
When Massive Attack's Mezzanine was released it was like a revelation to me. This record convinced me that there was a wide variety of great music to discover, apart from the metal world. I opened up to all kinds of trip hop and other electronic music. When I was 20, I was a trainee at the World Drum Festival and had a beer with Andy Gangadeen, who had played the drums on Mezzanine. What a great experience! At the same festival Sonny Emory and I talked backstage, while he got into his stage dress. He is such an awesome drummer–unbelievable. I truely admire Faithless. I loved Run DMC's “Crown Royal” (Arista Records → we released that at BMG). I love The Beastie Boys records, OutKast and Jay-Z. I probably listened to The Fugees' Blunted on Reality a thousand times. We worked with Dieter Bohlen at BMG, who sold 160 million records. From a songwriters' and producers' point of view (I work with Pro Tools from time to time) I also highly appreciate mainstream pop productions such as those of Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber. I love The Path of Totality of Skrillex and Korn and was obsessed with Nine Inch Nails for quite some time. Additionally, I listened to all kinds of radio pop and plenty of legendary pop artists like Elton John, Queen and The Beatles throughout my life. In short, I have listened to a lot of different music. Whatever music you are into; if you are a very ambitious musician, the Bandologie book is definitely the right choice for you.

Even more details on Bandologie
OK, now we are getting to the more freaky stuff. If you are only interested in musical success with your band, you may want to skip out on this section. I am getting into some web and production details...Is this website based on WordPress or Joomla?
This website is directly written in HTML. I know Joomla, WordPress and some other content management systems. For example, the German Bandologie website still runs on Joomla and it runs fine. However, I like the high speed of plain HTML (did you notice, this website is god DAMN $#%* fast!?
) and the idea that all details on this side can easily be customized and changed. What's the difference between the European version and the US version of the Bandologie book?
Actually, two printings of the first international edition of Bandologie where printed simultaneously: One in the US and one in Europe, both were printed in January 2012. I did this because the US customs/duty would have been more expensive than printing separate runs. Sounds crazy to you? Well, it sounds crazy to me, too! However, it's true.
This is the reason why the products and prices differ: The version printed in European includes so called “embossing” on the front cover and comes with a free guitar pick, while the US version is printed without embossing and you can send me a message to get a free pick after your purchase. However, in terms of content the books are exactly the same.
